Failing Like an Expert

Unforeseen changes

What? Another entry before October? What's going on over here?

That is the right question. Well, let's start with a bit of bad news. My main job is coming to an end, as I have a temporary contract. I was aware of this, and this is actually not the bad news. The bad news is I can't find a new job. I am currently seeking new job opportunities, the replies are heartbreaking though. No new job on the horizon.

So I've realized that maybe, starting November, I might be unemployed. And what could I do with my time other than finding a new job?

I reckoned that just doing the master's degree wouldn't be enough and that I could generate an income stream with translation if I only had something to show. I already have the PG cert, so that is not nothing. But I was thinking of something more substantial and have now signed up for a preparatory course for the DipTrans CIOL. I am planning to sit the exam in January 2026, so plenty of time to prepare.

And also, I know that jobwise, I am basically starting from scratch in an industry where I used to work 15 years ago. I have not contacts, and if I want to break into literary translation (which I want), I will have to present something to potential clients (literary agents and publishing houses mainly). The best would be a published work translated by me, but that is not the case. I hope that the DipTrans as a qualification might open more doors for me. Let's see where this will lead me.

As always, I'll keep you posted.
